Adam Back is an iconic figure in the world of cryptography and the cypherpunk movement . When mentioning the pioneers of Bitcoin who participated in and contributed to its rise, one cannot overlook the considerable work accomplished by Adam Back.

He is known for his invention of Hashcash, which was a significant influence on the development of Bitcoin, particularly regarding the proof-of-work concept that is central to Bitcoin's security system. It is, in fact, a reference explicitly cited by Satoshi Nakamoto in the Bitcoin white paper.

Current CEO of the company Blockstream – a true pillar in the bitcoin ecosystem – Adam Back continues to work today in the development of Bitcoin.

Scientific training and career

Adam Back, born July 1970 in London, is a British cryptographer and a pioneer of blockchain technology. He received his PhD in computer science from the University of Exeter, where he specialized in distributed systems. He also took advanced courses in economics, mathematics and physics.

In 1997 he invented Hashcash which is a proof of work protocol which has been used in systems to combat spam, for example. Quoted by Satoshi Nakamoto, a protocol similar to hashcash is used in the Bitcoin mining process.

Adam Back took his first steps in computing on a Sinclair ZX81 computer on which he self-trained in Basic and spent his time finding decryption keys in software.

After graduation, Adam Back spent his career consulting at startups and established companies in applied cryptography.

How does it relate to Bitcoin?

Back is a pioneer in digital asset research, alongside Wei Dai , David Chaum, and Hal Finney . His invention of Hashcash in 1997 was particularly fundamental to Bitcoin's history, as it enabled the implementation of Proof-of-Work. This consensus mechanism, used by Bitcoin, helps guarantee the security and integrity of transactions without requiring a central authority. It is a crucial aspect of how Bitcoin works.

As such, Adam Back was one of the first to receive an email from Satoshi Nakamoto. Moreover, in 2016, the Financial Times mentioned him as probably the real inventor of Bitcoin, with Nick Szabo and Hal Finney. In this case which sought the identity behind Satoshi Nakamoto, Adam Back was sued by Craig Wright for claiming that the latter was not the real Satoshi Nakamoto. Shortly thereafter, Craig Wright dropped his charges.

Adam Back, a cypherpunk

On his X profile, Adam Back does not hide the fact that he is a "cypherpunk". He has also campaigned to preserve the work of cryptography. For example, he campaigned for the use of ultra-compact code with a 2-line RSA signature file and a 3-line Perl signature file with non-exportable T-shirts in order to protest against the export regulations of cryptography. In the wake of cypherpunk thinking, cryptography serves the protection of individual privacy.

Adam Back also promoted the use of satellites to broadcast and receive bitcoin transactions, to further protect the Bitcoin network.

Its role in the development of Bitcoin

Adam's direct and indirect contribution to Bitcoin on Bitcoin is considerable. He played a key role in solving the problem of double spending in electronic payment systems, with the introduction of Hashcash. It allowed the establishment of the concept of proof-of-work, which is the basis of how Bitcoin works.

After Satoshi Nakamoto's death, Adam Back continued to work on Bitcoin development. It is now his primary occupation, as he was appointed CEO of Blockstream on October 3, 2016. Blockstream is a company dedicated to the development of Bitcoin and related products and services. He has overseen the introduction of various products such as the Liquid sidechain, Blockstream Mining Notes, and the open-source Jade hardware wallet, among others.
