When discussing Bitcoin adoption in Africa, attention often turns to Nigeria, Kenya, or South Africa, English-speaking giants where volumes and narratives are already well established.
But west of Nigeria, a country of thirteen million inhabitants has been patiently building, for several years, one of the most structured Bitcoin scenes in Francophone Africa: Benin. And its annual event, the Bitcoin Mastermind, returns in 2026 for a new edition from July 3 to 5 at the Golden Tulip Hotel in Cotonou.
The BMM2026, which presents itself as a top-tier conference dedicated to Bitcoin in Francophone Africa.
A conference born from a void to be filled
Bitcoin Mastermind is a project born from the observation thatFrancophone Africa lacked a space dedicated exclusively to Bitcointo its protocol, its philosophy, its concrete use cases. No magic cryptocurrencies, no promises of quick profits, no "next 100x". Just Bitcoin.
Behind the project, we find Loïc Kassamoto, founder of the event, accompanied byAlphonse MehoumeKassamoto belongs to that generation of African Bitcoin educators who understood early on that pedagogy needed to be face-to-face, in a region where the emphasis is on physical meetings and real-life interactions, unlike Western countries where most financial training takes place online. He was also one of the first to run a Bitcoin node in Benin, a detail that speaks volumes about the culture of technological sovereignty that permeates the project.
Why Benin, and why now?
The West African context plays a significant role. Amidst tensions surrounding the legacy monetary system, Bitcoin education efforts are booming in Francophone West Africa: the first physical Bitcoin center opened in Dakar (Bitique), though it has since closed, and there has been a proliferation of editions of the Dakar Bitcoin Days, launching multiple meet-ups and workshops related to Bitcoin…
What is happening in this region goes far beyond technological curiosity. For many Beninese, Bitcoin is not a speculative asset. It is a savings tool, a transfer tool, and increasingly a tool for financial sovereignty facing the CFA franc and regional banking frictions. This perspective is what makes all the difference compared to classic "crypto" conferences.
What will the BMM2026 be like?
At the time of writing, the official website (btcmastermind.xyz) confirms the return of the event under the name BMM2026 and positions it as the first Bitcoin conference in Francophone AfricaFull program details, specific dates, speakers, and venue are currently being released by the organizers. A previous 2025 edition, the Bitcoin Hackathon Mastermind, was held from June 30 to July 2 at the Azalaï Hotel in Cotonou, which gives an idea of the standard format: three days, in person, in Cotonou.
What we can already anticipate, based on the DNA of previous editions:
An exclusive focus on Bitcoin, a strong orientation towards the real use casesLightning payments, P2P, intra-African remittances, domestic mining, self-custody, and a clear commitment to connecting French-speaking communities between them.
Prices and access
Three packages are offered, all giving access to the three days (Dev Day, Conf Day, Celebration Day), partner booths and side events:
- Le Standard pass The 18,000 sats (approximately 10,000 FCFA, or about fifteen euros) pass covers the essentials: three days, booths, side events, and cocktails. It's the entry-level option, clearly designed to remain accessible to the local community.
- Le Semi pass At 58,000 sats (approximately 25,000 FCFA, around 38 euros), the package includes on-site buffets but removes cocktails. This is the "I come for the food and eat in peace" option.
- Le Full pass The 97,000 sats (approximately 50,000 FCFA, around 75 euros) package includes everything: three days, booths, side events, cocktails, buffets, BMM2026 goodies, a cultural and discovery tour, and access to the launch of the Bitcoin Knowledge Hub, which appears to be one of the structuring projects announced at the event.
Why this event matters (beyond Benin)
For the French-speaking Bitcoin community as a whole, and this is what should interest ZoneBitcoin readers, BMM2026 is not just another local event. It's a marker.
This is a sign that Francophone Africa is no longer waiting for permission from Paris, Brussels, or Montreal to build its own Bitcoin infrastructure, its own training programs, and its own conferences. It's a signal that the Francophone Bitcoin community truly exists.
For those who identify with a long-term, non-speculative and sovereign vision of Bitcoin, Benin is a place to watch. LBMM2026 is probably the best entry point to understand, from the inside, what is being built there.
