Metaverses make you “live” moments of History (as if you were there)

13 April 2022

The tourism sector is taking a close interest in metaverses, which could well give it new life. Indeed, the entire way we represent art and history can be transformed thanks to the virtual worlds that are the metaverses.

Tomorrow you can visit the Giza pyramid without having to travel. You will even be able to see before your eyes how the pharaohs lived. Imagine reliving Caesar's Rome or strolling through Greek temples observing Plato at work? A history nerd's dream and a tech nerd's reality.

Thanks to blockchain, we can take a trip into the past with the technologies of the future.

This is becoming a reality with blockchain technology.

Until now, we have only thought about virtual art with NFTs through the prism of art galleries and virtual exhibitions. Furthermore, when we refer to metaverses, we tend to think of virtual worlds of the type Decentraland, intended for video game players. However, there are as many metaverses as there are universes and themes.

Basically, we imagined collectors and visitors with 3D headsets on their noses observing virtual works of art through their glasses.

In fact, it goes further with the metaverses.

The entire sector of art, tourism, the preservation of historic sites and the transmission of history is at stake here.

Historical sites brought up to date

Castellos and castle owners who have suffered from a drop in traffic in recent years may be able to find a new source of financing with the metaverses. How?

Well, the idea is rather simple while still being ingenious.

This involves creating augmented reality maps of properties. This will allow people to visit historic sites without having to travel.

We have seen with the situation of confinements linked to Covid that it has become a reality to be confined at home, without being able to go out.

Moreover, let us remember that it is in particular the health crisis which largely explains the craze for NFTs and metaverses that we experienced in 2020 and in 2021 (in full confinement therefore).

That said, virtual tours already existed before covid. Let's say that covid has accelerated this new industry.

Indeed, the virtual world then remains the only possible world in which everyone can escape and live pleasant experiences.

Ultimately, virtual tours and digital museums are forms of “normal” evolution in the sector.

Thus, for historical sites of all kinds, metaverses are enormous opportunities to reach a wider audience, not to mention the international world.

A first “successful” experience in Prague

Virtual museums have already been inaugurated in the Czech Republic. Indeed, in October 2021, an exhibition and auction was held at Lobkowicz Palace, a castle located in Prague. Visitors could see NFTs as well as paintings dating from the time of the creation of the castle (16th century).

Czech cultural heritage was thus able to be visible to people all over the world, without them having to travel.

The company 3.0 incubates other projects of this kind. Thus, Bueckeburg Castle in Germany, a palace-museum ( Jai Vilas Palace) in India and a new museum in Ghana are among the upcoming virtual exhibitions planned.

Finally, in terms of technological progress, this is only a stage superior to the audio headsets that we currently have in museums.

Later, we will have an audio-visual headset that we can wear at home.

When will we be able to benefit from it?

Currently, the metaverses are still in their early stages. Very clearly and metaverse cryptos are still considered “early” investments. Certainly, brands and celebrities are rallying behind this technology, but it is still in its embryonic stage.

Moreover, the'Ukraine has already thought about creating an NFT digital museum about the war.

Educational platforms and virtual museums are looking for their places. For many experts in the field, this constitutes nothing more than the future of tourism.

The experience could be more immersive and more fun. We can imagine interactive projections with documentaries and other visual projections. This could be even more impactful than the physical visits we know today.

In fact, for the younger generation, the metaverse could be a bridge making art and art history even more interesting and more accessible.

Indeed, the possibilities for making the history of a given place even more interesting are limitless. Imagining juxtapositions with science fiction scenarios is, for example, made possible with metaverses.

Reliving historical experiences in 3D is also an experience now made possible. We can also recreate wars and even participate in them with virtual weapons.

Historic sites as a simple source of financing to set up

Historic sites have very high maintenance costs. We have seen several attempts, particularly in France, to find new sources of financing for this overly expensive heritage. Moreover, many people claim that it is no longer possible to live in castles as they require exhausting daily maintenance.

They are intended to become cultural sites or spaces welcoming newlyweds 👰‍♀️. Indeed, one-off room rentals have gradually become a new way for castles to be used. And the use is rather pleasant, we can all agree.

the pharaohs of the future
Thanks to the metaverses, we could visit museums and discover works in a new way. We could even interact with the works or consider them in a new visual scenario.

Virtual visits would prove to be more profitable because, for example, you no longer have problems with upkeep, maintenance or even turning on the heating or air conditioning. These are huge savings compared to actual visits.

In addition, a Chinese in Shanghai could visit the room just like a Jamaican, without having to travel at all. We can add the fact that there are 1000 visitors or 100,000, this has no other impact on the physical space.

This is all very exciting. This is all the more true for the hundreds of historic sites in emerging countries which have not found suitable financing solutions. With the metaverses, perhaps everything has already been found?
