Earn Bitcoins by playing Minecraft

July 15, 2023

The world of Minecraft is opening up to Bitcoin. The video game Minecraft is one of the most popular games in the world. Since its creation in 2009, it has been downloaded more than 200 million times. So it makes sense that developers are looking to find new ways to attract players.

This is why the world of Minecraft is now opening up to the world of cryptocurrency, with the possibility for players to earn Bitcoins while playing.

A treasure hunt to earn bitcoins

The server satlantis is a Bitcoin-themed Minecraft server. It is operated by community members and allows players to earn Bitcoins by playing. This integration was made possible thanks to the Bitcoin-centric payment startup Zebedee (ZBD).

Gaming technology compatible with Bitcoin's Lightning network has been integrated into this Minecraft server.

A coherent business model

An Internet user named BitcoinJake09 created an open source MOD of the Minecraft game called SatoshiQuest. This MOD allows users to participate in a scavenger hunt in hopes of winning some precious Bitcoins. To get lives, players must pay $1 entry fee to a Bitcoin address. 90% of this amount is intended to increase the reward for the hidden treasure. The remaining 10% is intended to finance the development and hosting of the game.

Players can withdraw their winnings directly to the ZBD wallet app which is available on iOS and Android.

How is it different from a play-to-earn game?

We can salute the coherence of the business model which stands out from other play-to-earn gaming models which involve complicated token issuance processes. Most of the time, play-to-earn games that allow you to earn tokens by playing involve tokens that lose value over time. We have seen this with Axie Infitniy and other games which are no longer profitable in periods of bear markets. This explains many play-to-earn players are very disappointed today.

Conversely, with games that reward players in bitcoin, one can expect a prose of the potential value of one's bitcoin. Thus, games to earn bitcoins are then more recommended in the long term.

The rise of games incorporating Bitcoin

Minecraft players can now earn Bitcoins thanks to a brand new integration implemented in partnership with payments startup Zebedee. This enthusiasm for integrating Bitcoin into video games is not surprising. Revenue from micropayments available in mobile games reached record highs in 2019 at $86 billion. Using video games seems to be an interesting method to generate interest around Bitcoin. Likewise, this allows the bitcoin community to be able to play games while earning satoshis.

Gains in bitcoin and in particular through le Lightning Network, seems to be an interesting alternative in the context of micropayments on mobile games. Many games take advantage of the relatively easy integration of Lightning to offer their players opportunities to earn bitcoin.

This is for example the case of SatoshiQuest, rollercoin or even the game Bitcoin Bounce. Even though at the moment the games may be simplistic, the gaming industry is actively working to develop new games incorporating bitcoin.
