The creator of the famous antivirus was found dead in his prison cell in Barcelona on June 23, 2021. This happened a few hours after Spanish justice agreed to extradite him to the United States. He was to be tried there for tax evasion in particular.
Some rumors say that he committed suicide while others indicate that it was more of a natural death. It's still too early to know...
At 75 years old, John McAfee truly lived a thousand lives. It wouldn't be surprising to see producers vying to make a film about his life(s), given how impressive and incredible it all is. He had already served time in prison in the Dominican Republic, a country he allegedly smuggled firearms into. In 2012, he was arrested in Guatemala after escaping from Belize, where police were investigating the death of his neighbor. He was even reportedly accused of murder—that's how tumultuous his life has been!
And even though he's been very controversial in recent years, there's no denying the fact that he's been absolutely brilliant at software design. We still owe him the antivirus software that bears his name, and that's no small thing. A true pioneer in computer security, he launched an entire industry worth billions of dollars. He has always been on the fringes, displaying a lifestyle that is different from other high-tech entrepreneurs.
Impetuous, outspoken, John McAfee was a character in himself.
He managed to sell his VirusScan software to Intel for more than 7 billion dollars at the time and it was from there, having become a muli-millionaire, that he experienced his greatest escapades. For example, he ran to be the Libertarian Party candidate in the 2016 and 2020 elections in the USA.
He has never hidden his desire to abolish taxes, of whatever nature they may be. For him, taxation was simply freedom-killing.
A fervent defender of cryptocurrencies and bitcoin, he was one of the very first entrepreneurs to show his support for this emerging technology. He was the first to claim that bitcoin would reach millions of dollars…
He necessarily contributed to making bitcoin known with these grandiose estimates. For many, he was a crypto guru, without even trying to be.
Since John McAfee was a visionary for many, he brought a lot of credibility to bitcoin at a time when few people believed in it.
