For Pride Month (June), we are pleased to talk about crypto projects linked to the LGBT cause. Even if there are not a plethora of projects, there are some that deserve our/your attention.
With blockchain, people from the LGBTQ+ community are finding new opportunities to make themselves heard. Cryptos can also serve as a springboard for many minorities and for many struggles (social, economic, etc.).
Today, there are 71 countries in the world where homosexuality is punishable by law. However, in the cryptosphere, no government can impose its laws. Metaverses are parallel, virtual universes that are open to all people on earth, without restrictions of gender, race or social class.
It is in this sense that blockchain technology and Web3 generally speaking, brings real progress in the social field for isolated populations. It is no longer only from an economic point of view that #Bitcoin is emulated but now also from a societal point of view 😉
To provide our support (on our small scale) to all minority or excluded communities, here is a small (non-exhaustive) list of crypto projects qualified as LGBTQ+.
We can update the list and add projects as we go. Do not hesitate to present projects to us if you know of any. Oh yes, we love participatory journalism.
Gay Pride and “marriage for all” in Decentraland
Does this surprise you? During Pride Month, Decentraland has proven to be a welcoming land for the LGBT cause. Many events, concerts and other digital entertainment have been offered on Decentraland. The gay pride is called "Metaverse Pride" and it takes place from June 3 to 30.
The entire international LGBTQIA+ crypto community can therefore engage and meet other members from around the world. Thus, the homosexual communities of these countries can then live and participate virtually in these pride rallies. Community-specific emojis have been created. So couples of all sexual orientations can express themselves and kiss in the metaverse. Of course, it's virtual but it remains real in the sense that there are real people behind the avatars.
Moreover, it will also be possible to get married in the metaverse. Newly married couples will receive a certificate (in the form of NFT, of course) to symbolize their union.
Drag queens will also have their avatars as well as all non-binary people. A dance show specific to this universe that is Vogue dance will also be featured in the metaverse.
The first LGBT foundation at the heart of the “pink” economy
The "LGBT Foundation" is certainly the most concrete project that exists in the crypto universe. It is also a project that aims to be crucial for the new pinkeconomy on the blockchain. Currently, the pink economy represents an annual market of more than $4. The ambition of the LGBT foundation is to become the gateway used in the crypto transition of so-called "pink" businesses. For example, for a store selling clothing for LGBT people, the foundation helps them accept cryptocurrencies.
The LGBT Foundation remains fundamentally a non-profit organization based in Hong Kong. The creation of the token aims to serve all projects that want to participate/help/contribute to the LGBTQIA+ cause in the world. All associations or companies can become a partner of the foundation.
Thus, the project already supports associations for the protection of LGBT people living in countries where homosexuality is punishable by law.
The foundation has also launched its own wallet which is available on iOS and Android. Anyone can use it and transfer cryptos easily. It is also the official wallet for obtaining and using the LGBT token.
Moreover, the foundation has established numerous partnerships such as with the gay social network Hornet For example. This network has no less than 25 million users. It is expected that payments on the platform will be made via the crypto LGBT token. We are therefore dealing with a real utility token.
2/ People of Color (POC) or the inclusion of all minorities
In the project People of color, co-founder Akbar Hamid, wants to include all minorities in his project. This therefore not only concerns the LGBT community but also cultural minorities, for example.
The “People of Color” project aims to be an online laboratory to improve diversity and minority representation in Web3.
The project is currently working with another well-known metaverse, The Sandbox. It will create a virtual hub to promote equity and inclusion in the crypto landscape. In this sense, a space has emerged called "Valley of Belonging" in which we find 8430 NFT avatars that represent a wide and varied range of different ethnic, gender or sexual identities in the world. The NFT collection includes 36 different shades of skin color, reflecting what humanity presents to us as a whole.
Other purely cultural elements are also represented, such as turbans, scarves, jewelry, clothing or other "ethnic" characteristics.
3/ Maricoin: a token for the LGBT crypto community
Project maricoin was launched on February 14, 2022, Valentine's Day. What is interesting to note here is that MariCoin was developed on the Algorand network. We rarely see tokens created on this blockchain.
As for the goal of the LGBT crypto project MariCoin, it is very similar to what the LGBT foundation does.
Final Word: Cryptos are becoming more and more “gay-friendly”
Here we have only mentioned the most important projects in the fcryptsphere. There are many other equally interesting projects that we have not covered to avoid making the article heavier.
For example, there are countless projects in NFTs that support the LGBT cause. We told you about a young transgender artist who has had great success with his NFTs with major artistic institutions like Chritie's. This is not an isolated story.
We can cite the collection of NFTs around the politician Harvey Milk Plaza. He is the first politician to openly accept his homosexuality in the USA. Thus, the funds raised by the NFTs of “The Friends of Harvey Milk Plaza” are used to finance and support LGBT+ civil rights
To conclude, we would say that the project is still in its early stages, of course, but it remains very promising. Whether it is LGBT crypto projects or to support certain causes for a fairer world, we can rejoice.
Overall, more and more projects other than purely financial will nourish and expand the crypto ecosystem as a whole. And, that can only be beneficial for everyone.
