The Ministry of Education of El Salvador has announced that it will implement a program dedicated to learning about Bitcoin in public schools in the country, from the start of the 2024 school year.
The training will be conducted by the non-profit organization called " Mi Primer Bitcoin » (MPB), which stands for “My First Bitcoin” in French. The Mi Primer Bitcoin program will award a state-recognized diploma to students who complete the program.
The need to educate the population about Bitcoin
It must be remembered that when El Salvador adopted Bitcoin as legal tender in 2021, the Salvadoran population, more than 50% did not seem familiar with the concept of Bitcoin. Many tourists who have visited El Salvador have found that very few merchants actually accept bitcoin. This is particularly what reports the Italian couple, Rikki and Laura who have given themselves the mission of living 45 days in El Salvador using only Bitcoin. While the 3000 inhabitants of the village The Zonte (today called “Bitcoin Beach") have distinguished themselves by a stronger use of Bitcoin, the rest of the Salvadoran population, which has more than 6 million inhabitants, seems to suffer from a lack of knowledge on the subject. This proves to be a handicap in the perspective of a adoption of Bitcoin, on a national scale.
Learning Bitcoin is not an easy thing and you have to become familiar with original concepts that cannot be assimilated quickly. So, understanding what a seed phrase, a private key, a UtXO transaction or even knowing how transactions work can confuse beginners. Thus, the government has to establish an educational program to teach the population knowledge about Bitcoin.
It is possible to discover the complete program in the school booklet available for download online.
Mi Primer Bitcoin: A nationwide learning program
The association Mi Primer Bitcoin is given one year to prepare future public school teachers, who will come from 75 different schools. The objective being to thoroughly train future trainers and teachers in Bitcoin so that the teaching program is tested and validated before its incorporation into the country's national school curriculum, in 2024.
Today, more than 300 people have already taken introductory bitcoin courses provided by the association. More than 0000 people have reportedly graduated from the full program.
In addition to theoretical lessons on economics and finance, Mi Primer Bitcoin teaches basic knowledge about Bitcoin such as learning how to create a wallet, how to restore it and import it to another wallet. It is also taught how to perform a on-chain transaction and know how to find the transaction on a block explorer.
These practical lessons will then help accelerate the adoption of bitcoin in the country. In-depth courses are also included in the program.
A program that will serve as a reference for other countries
El Salvador, having been the first country in the world to have officially legalized bitcoin, is once again the first in the world to design an educational program dedicated to Bitcoin. The founder of Mi Primer Bitcoin, John Dennehy, the program also has the support of the Salvadoran government. declared to CoinTelegraph that the association "is already in preliminary talks with two other governments ofLatin America interested in setting up Bitcoin education similar to that in El Salvador for local students.”
Thus, communities like the Bitcoin Cuba have already announced that registrations are open to follow the first edition program. Communities of bitcoiners from Honduras have also expressed their intention to do the same.
