There are more and more Bitcoin villages spreading across the world. Yesterday, it was Zambia's turn to formalize its first bitcoin community: "Bitcoin Victoria Falls". Located in Livingstone, near the famous Victoria Falls, the bitcoin village has settled in the country's center of attraction.
This is the first Bitcoin circular economy in Zambia. The Livingstone-based community's goal is to foster financial empowerment, democratize bitcoin education, and accelerate economic opportunities in the region.
The people behind this imitative are » Bitcoin Diary " who organized Bitcoin meet-up in the country, as well as the bitcoin educator Mabvuto banda. This one will be in charge of giving courses and training on bitcoin, following the program of “ Mi Primer Bitcoin", which serves as a national program in El Salvador.
As a first step, the Victoria Falls Bitcoin village in Zambia will first try to train merchants in bitcoin payments.
A new village of bitcoiners in Africa
The initiative received the support of many people and organizations including the village Bitcoin Ekasi in South Africa, Bitcoin Beach in El Salvador, and other active members of the Bitcoin ecosystem. The village has a dedicated page on the bitcoin crowdfunding site » Geyser » in order to be able to receive other financial support from the community.
The first Bitcoin village operating in a circular economy model based on Bitcoin is the village in El Salvador “El Zonte » better known today as Bitcoin Beach. The documentary "Dare to Dream" which traces its history and its functioning shows how bitcoin can serve as leverage for a local economy. The use of bitcoin has made it possible to attract new tourists (familiar with bitcoin), to create new businesses and to facilitate money transfers within the village.
Following what is considered by many to be a success, many other bitcoin villages have appeared around the world, particularly in Africa. Thus, with this new community in Zambia, participants hope to stimulate financial inclusion while creating new economic opportunities for the region.
Strong appeal for Bitcoin in Zambia despite a strict regulatory framework
In Zambia, cryptocurrency is not recognized as legal tender. In 2019, the Bank of Zambia said in a official document that the use and payment in cryptocurrency was not legally authorized.
However, in April 2023, the Minister of Science and Technology, Felix Mutati said that tests were currently underway in the country to help modify the current regulations. The government takes note of the rise in interest in bitcoin among the population and seeks to provide a suitable regulatory framework.
With this new village created, the progression of Bitcoin in Africa continues its ever more frantic race...
