The list of 12 projects that received funding from the OpenSats organization

July 24, 2023

OpenSats is an investment fund dedicated to companies developing solutions related to Bitcoin. There are certainly more and more innovative companies including Bitcoin. However, for ever greater adoption of bitcoin, many tools and services need to be created and launched.

To help them develop and refine their products, non-profit organizations like OpenSats are there to support and help bitcoin entrepreneurs.

Recently, OpenSats just published funding and grants awarded to more than 12 projects in the Bitcoin and Lightning ecosystem. Here is the list of projects which will receive funding in the coming weeks and which could well mark the future evolution of the bitcoin landscape.

Payjoin Dev Kit

Payjoin brings privacy to Bitcoin without changing the way we're used to using it. Payjoin transactions are no different from normal activity he chain, they therefore reinforce everyone’s confidentiality.

Payjoin is easy to integrate and reverts to default working settings where it is not supported, but it can only be effective when senders and receivers include standard payjoin support in their software. Payjoin Dev Kit allows wallet developers to easily integrate standard BIP 78 payjoins anywhere, with working reference integrations for Bitcoin Core, LND, and BDK.

Bolt12 for LND

Bolt12 brings a new invoice format, allowing static invoices as well as the possibility of recurring payments. It adds support for receiving payments natively without using a web server. It also uses Blinded Paths to hide a node's destination both during invoice retrieval and payment. This improves the privacy and, therefore, the security of the payment recipient.

Therefore, Bolt12 makes it much easier to receive and send payments without any third-party infrastructure natively. Static invoices make recurring donations and payments much easier.

Splicing

Le splicing is the ability to resize Lightning channels, giving users the Lightning Network many additional benefits that were not intuitively obvious at first. Splicing scales Lightning by removing a fundamental limitation. Removing this limitation reduces the use of block space, an important step toward the maturation of the Lightning Network that will enable the onboarding of millions, if not billions, of people. It is in particular this technology that the wallet Phoenix used in its new version.

Raspiblitz

Raspiblitz is a DIY device that allows you to run a Lightning node with a Bitcoin Core full node on your Raspberry Pi. Although the Raspberry Pi is the most commonly used hardware, it has been developed to support several different platforms .

Project open source was launched in 2018 as part of a Lightning hackathon in Germany. Since then, it has grown to over 150 volunteer contributors on GitHub. The software integrates dozens of services and tools through its plugin system and advanced features such as touchscreen support, channel autopilot, backup systems, DynDNS, SSH tunnel , etc.

Labelbase

Labelbase is a label management service for Bitcoin transactions and addresses. It provides functionality for adding labels, importing and exporting labels, and offers a public API for integration with existing portfolios and workflows.

Labelbase supports BIP-329, a format for unifying label data. The goal of the project is to offer a practical solution for managing labels associated with Bitcoin transactions and addresses in wallets and other tools. By providing a unified label management interface, Labelbase promotes better organization and understanding of Bitcoin transactions while ensuring identity confidentiality.

ZeroSync

Although ZeroSync is still in its early stages, its promise is to enable verification of Bitcoin's chain state in an instant. It offers compact cryptographic proofs to validate all transaction history and current address balances.

The first application is to “zerosync” Bitcoin Core. The long-term vision for ZeroSync is to become a useful toolkit for network data.

Mutiny Wallet

mutiny wallet

Mutiny Wallet is a web wallet capable of working on web browsers, providing instant integration and resistance to censorship of the platform. It is self-custody, privacy-focused, user-friendly and open source under the MIT license.

The wallet places a strong emphasis on privacy, scalability and accessibility. In addition to the features you expect from a Lightning wallet standard, the team is working on the integration of functionalities related to Nostr in the wallet, such as a feed of friends' Zaps, sending and receiving native Zaps, a Lightning subscription specification for services like Nostr Relays, and a P2P DLC marketplace.

The team's goal is to provide users with a seamless experience, combining the power of Bitcoin and Lightning with social media in a way that fits the Bitcoin ethos.

next-auth Lightning Provider

The goal of this project is to implement an authentication provider for next-auth, an authentication provider for the popular open source framework NextJS. The next-auth framework has nearly 500 downloads weekly and powers the authentication of many modern web, mobile, and desktop applications. Having a plug-and-play provider for Lightning makes integration easier and more attractive for blockchain developers.

Cashu

Cashu is a “Chaumian” type e-cash system designed for Bitcoin that provides near-perfect privacy to users of Bitcoin custody apps. A Cashu does not know who you are, what your balance is, or who you are transacting with.

Payments are executed without anyone being able to censor specific users. There are several implementations of the Cashu protocol. Popular open source wallets are Cashu Nutshell, Cashu.me and Nutstash.

Educational projects

In addition to the software projects that were funded by OpenSats, three educational initiatives were selected for grant funding.

It should be noted that the grant programs are made possible by donors from the Bitcoin General Funds.

What is OpenSats?

OpenSats is a 501(c) public charitable organization that seeks to support various projects that can strengthen theBitcoin ecosystem. The mission is then to support contributors and projects which are free and above all open-source, in order to further popularize the use and adoption of bitcoin. The funded projects are under the free and accessible "MIT" license, just like the Bitcoin software. In addition, the organization only funds projects that follow the democratic ethics of Bitcoin. The goal is not, as with venture capitalists, to get rich on Bitcoin-related projects, but to contribute to making free projects more popular.

OpenSats claims that "by supporting these projects, we can help make bitcoin more accessible, robust, secure and decentralized. We also believe that these projects have the potential to revolutionize the way we think about sovereignty and individual freedoms.

We believe OpenSats can play a vital role in the future of bitcoin. We are committed to supporting the development of free and open source software, and we believe bitcoin has the potential to change the world.

OpenSats

OpenSats publishes financial statements and board meeting minutes online, ensuring organizational transparency.
