We opened this series of portrait interviews with builders, entrepreneurs, traders, popularizers, influencers and other enthusiasts of the crypto-sphere. This is the opportunity to learn a little more about them. You don't know them all but they work in the shadows (or in the light) to help you discover more and more of the blissful mysteries of the sometimes merciless world of cryptocurrencies.
Today, we had the honor of interviewing Rémi, who sails between the seas and oceans on the SatoBoat, a beautiful sailboat that carries Bitcoin as its standard.
Hi Rémi, would you like to introduce yourself in a few lines for those who don’t know you (yet)?
I am from Brussels by birth, by friendships, by heart. I m 35 years old. I define myself as a sea and Bitcoin adventurer.
I worked for a few years in the energy optimization of buildings before leaving everything to devote myself to these two passions.
You travel by boat, it's original, how did you come up with the idea?
One day, at home, I wanted to leave the internet and my room to discuss Bitcoin in real life. It’s thanks to a comrade, Emmanuel, who launched the podcast “Let’s talk Bitcoin” that the project was born. I contacted him because I wanted to talk with people who knew more than me and stop “convincing” people who knew less than me.
Given that he lives in Canada, he suggested that I do a “fireside” podcast where we discussed Bitcoin and much more… After 2 hours of discussion, the idea was posed, there was more than…
Here is the link in case some people want to discover the genesis of the project ^^: (https://parlonsbitcoin.com/podcasts/es-tu-maximaliste)
PS: I advise everyone to go listen to him, he is a very good popularizer and he has a very pleasant voice to listen to!
(Editor's note: Indeed, it's a very good podcast that we also recommend 🙂
How did you discover Bitcoin? By chance? An accident? A revelation?
Actually, I started at the end of 2019 with Etherum ^^. Then the whole Covid period allowed me to understand the entire crypto ecosystem in more depth. Little by little through mistakes, readings, exchanges, rereadings, videos and re-exchanges, it was quite naturally that I moved towards Bitcoin.
And then at a certain point, faced with the complexity of this new paradigm and its implications for society, mixed with a feeling that there was something different with Bitcoin, I decided to focus exclusively on it. .
What was your biggest challenge in bringing your project to fruition?
Managing the unknown, whether technical for the ship (keeping it in good condition, repairing in the event of accidents, etc.), financial (I want the adventure to last as long as possible; at some point we have to generate income) and personal (it's a bit of a lifestyle change ^^)
You can also tell us about your successes 😉
Each new step is a success (the renovation of the ship and leaving Brussels, arriving until Surfin'Bitcoin just in time ^^, pass the Strait of Gibraltar). And then, there are also the countless encounters. Thanks to this somewhat crazy project, I have the chance to meet well-known bitcoiners who help me learn about it and help me move the project forward, such as the StackinSat gang, Nicholas Burtey, Didi Taihuttu, Knut Svanholm (the author of “Bitcoin, Infinity divided by 21 million").
How do you think your project will evolve? How do you see yourself in 5 years? On a bigger boat?
The objective of my project is to learn and share the concepts of autonomy and independence inherent to sailing and Bitcoin. The more I learn and share, the better! To do this, I have to sail the seas to meet other Bitcoiners and no-coiners too. I'm currently in chapter 2: a navigation loop in Western Europe. Chapter 3 involves crossing the Atlantic Ocean to attend Bitcoin Miami in April '24.
Following chapters 4,5,6…, I would also like to go to Canada, then move on to the West side of the Americas, go to The Savior, then perhaps the Pacific… We’ll see where the wind blows ^^
Sato is a great boat that suits me well at the moment. But who knows maybe the rest of the adventure will make me want to change ships.
Where can we follow you? Your networks? How can I follow the boat's route and be notified?
The bulk of my “big” ^^ community is on Twitter where I mostly share Bitcoin-oriented content. On Instagram and Facebook, I share more about travel and sailing. To follow me: @satoboatproject
I also have a website: www.satoboat.io
And for those who want to have fun following me day by day, you can go to www.vesselfinder.com (the fly traffic of boats 😉) and type “Sato” and click on the “sailing vessel” made in Belgium.
If you have something to add, idea, or other, such as a call, a partnership, etc.
To those who wish to discover sailing and/or Bitcoin and travel a short distance on Sato, do not hesitate to contact me. We will discuss what is feasible, in which region…
To support the project financially, I obviously accept all donations via the Lightning Network: satoboat@lntxbot.com
I will also put my project on Geyser (a crowdfunding platform on Bitcoin) with a view to reaching the Anglo-Saxon sphere.
Did you like this interview? Don’t hesitate to share SatoBoat’s daring adventure.
