The hackathon "Build For Africa" ​​opens registrations for the 2023 edition ⚡️

The “Build For Africa” hackathon is a virtual event open to anyone who wants to create Bitcoin-related applications to solve problems specific to the African continent.

Created under the aegis of the “ Africa Bitcoin Conference » of 2023 and the Btrust organization, the hackathon will serve as a catalyst for collaborative innovation of Bitcoin-related projects.

What is the objective of Build for Africa?⚡️

The goal of the hackathon is to create new solutions that are related to Bitcoin and lightning network that respond to specific challenges. The main objective being to push the adoption of bitcoin in Africa with simple and practical tools to use for the population 🌍.

Through this hackathon, concrete use cases of Bitcoin will be highlighted. It will also be about inspiring Africans to actively engage in entrepreneurship with Bitcoin.

Participants can register in one or two categories.

  • Cross-border payments/ Payments
  • Microtransactions and micropayments
  • Agriculture and Food Security
  • Education and e-learning
  • Health and Telemedicine
  • Peer-to-peer (P2P) marketplaces
  • Social/Community Impact 
  • Governance and anti-corruption
  • Energy and Environment 
  • Media and entertainment
  • Confidentiality, KYC, non-custodial solutions
  • Privacy Tech
  • Business tools 
  • Regulatory framework 

Who can participate?

The hackathon opens its doors not only to developers who could develop applications but also to members of the community who have ideas and projects that they wish to implement. So, you can register by submitting a project or by joining an already formed team.

All profiles can register for the hackathon:

  • Bitcoin and Lightning Developer
  • Expert and passionate about the Bitcoin field.
  • Generic application developer
  • Expert in business development and marketing
  • UI/UX designer
  • Content creator
  • Bitcoin Trainer
  • a Data Scientist
  • Or simply the curious!

How to register?

To participate in this hackathon, you must register via the Eventornado platform. Once registered, you have two options: submit your idea and form a team, or join an existing team. Registrations will remain open until the official start of the hackathon, which will begin the week of October 16.

How does the Hackathon take place?

There will be several phases in the hackathon which will take place from September 26 to October 20, 2023.

  • 💡An ideathon phase of 4 days will take place during the week of September 26, where participants will be able to reflect on the ideas they have. It’s then time to refine concepts and build teams. All ideas and solutions will be recorded in a table. If your team doesn't have an idea yet, you can choose from the ideas available on the board and choose to join them.
  • 💻 The hacking phase will begin on October 16 where teams can take action. Throughout the hacking week, mentors will be present to help the teams.
  • 🏆 October 20 is the final submission deadline of your solutions with pitch decks. The October 22 deadline may apply for teams requesting an extension. A jury will evaluate the projects and announce the finalists on October 27.

You should know that even after the end of the hackathon, even if the solution is not finalized, the teams are free to continue working on their projects.

What are the hackathon prices?

The hackathon offers prizes worth a total of $10,000 in bitcoin.

  • 🏆 1st place: $5
  • 2nd place: $2
  • 3nd place: $1
  • Best design: $1

Events linked to the Build For Africa hackathon

Learning workshops, presentations, help sessions and discussions will be organized during the hackathon but also during the AfroBitcoin Conference which will be held in December at the Kempinski Hotel in Accra, Ghana. The best applications selected for the semi-finals will then be able to propose their projects during the project presentation day, during the conference.
