Human Right Foundation (HRF) offers 20 BTC to help activists

July 27, 2023

The Human Right Foundation (HRF) has officially launched a series of 10 challenges for a total reward of 20 Bitcoin. A considerable sum at a time when 1 BTC is equivalent to around 50,000 dollars.

The HRF wants to improve and create Bitcoin-related services that would help activists around the world use bitcoin with practical applications. The applications will then have to be thought of with this use in mind. Thus, the challenges mainly focus on confidentiality, resistance to censorship and individual sovereignty.

The HRF will fund developers on open source projects focused on different protocols, the network lightning et Nostr among other things, in order to increase user-friendliness and user confidentiality.

The mission is to provide, ultimately, tools optimized for human rights activists and advocates.

There are 10 challenges in total with prizes of 2 BTC for each task, which today amounts to around $60,000.

  • So, the first challenge is dedicated to creating a Bitcoin UI Kit for the Penpot open source project. The idea is to replicate it in an open source version which would then be freely accessible for all.
  • The second challenge consists of implementing a Payjoin protocol in a version where users could send and receive transactions without operating a public server.
  • For the third challenge, this concerns the creation of a client application on Nostr with the goal that a group can communicate without there being any risk of metadata leaking.
  • The fourth challenge proposes to create an open source mobile Bitcoin wallet that would be able to process silent payment which were proposed by the BIP 352 provided by Josie Bake.
  • Concerning the fifth challenge, it involves creating a Bolt12 offer generator integrated into a mobile wallet, without the need to copy and paste or scan a QR Code.
  • The sixth challenge is to create a Lightning address generator that is self-managed and accessible only from a smartphone, without the user configuring their own web server.
  • For the seventh challenge, the objective is to create a border Wallet that would be integrated into an existing bitcoin wallet. The idea is to allow users to be able to memorize their seed phrase when traveling between different countries/jurisdictions.
  • The eighth challenge wants to create a feature multi-signature which would be easy to use for a beginner on a mobile wallet.
  • Regarding the ninth challenge The ninth challenge offers a 2 BTC reward for a self-managed wallet implementation powered by FROST, or flexible and optimal Schnorr threshold signatures. This dynamic multisignature protocol must allow modification of all signatories without transferring funds to another address.
  • Finally, the tenth and final challenge concerns the ecash protocol, Cashu. This challenge is divided into several challenges with specific requirements for thatch systems.
