metaverse virtual idols

Virtual idols, the next stars of the metaverses?

March 11, 2022

Virtual idols represent personalities or avatars, typically in 3D.

You may be discovering this phenomenon because it does not make much noise -curiously- in Europe and France. In Asia, conversely, the phenomenon of virtual stars has almost become commonplace.

In October 2021, a profile appeared on TikTok called Liu Yexi by appearing as a virtual human. She wears traditional Chinese clothing. It took just one day to capture more than 2 million likes and get 1,3 million subscribers. As of this writing, the virtual idol has more than 10 million subscribers. Liu Yexi is considered the first metaverse influencer.

Even though on TikTok, we are more used to viral videos, this one has something special. It shows us the ever-increasing interest in what are called "virtual idols".

You will see, in this article, how metaverses play an ever-increasing role in this phenomenon.

What exactly are virtual idols?

En 1989, the National Medical Library in the USA evoked for the first time the concept of “visible human program”. This was the first time the idea of a virtual digital human was mentioned when the internet had just been created.

The virtual human refers here to a virtual image of human appearance, anthropomorphic. Avatars on the metaverses can have different styles as you know: Realities, cartoon, illustrated or even drawn.

If the virtual human is taking on such importance in Asia, it is because it is not the first time that we have seen idols of this type appear. In Japan, virtual artists have existed for a long time. Virtual idols started in 1990 with idols like Hatsune MikuEg.

Thus, on stage, it is a holographic representation which excites the crowd as an artist in the flesh would do.

This is what a "real" concert of a virtual idol like Hatsune Miku looks like.

Then, over time, the concept evolved and there were other experiments of this type such as with Kizuna AI or groups like A-Soul created by Yuehua Entertainment and ByteDance.

We can draw a parallel with mini concerts on Fortnite or musical events in snoop doog on the metaverses, but here, we are crossing a threshold.

In recent years, the concept has gained a lot of popularity with very realistic virtual humans like AYAYI or Lil Miquela. Some virtual idols are generated by computers from real human models and others are created entirely on software from scratch, to put it like that.

Why are virtual humans so attractive?

Let's take the example of a virtual idol created in 2016 which has recognized and ever-increasing success. We are going to talk about Lil miquela who a 19 year old virtual idol, of Hispanic-Brazilian origin living in Los Angeles.

She is a musician who has an account on Instagram followed by millions of followers. Lil Miquela is considered the first virtual influencer. She carries out marketing campaigns for large groups such as Samsung and Prada (source: newspaper Le Monde, which had just ment titled his article: Lil Miquela, a virtual influencer who is worth gold). This is how she presents herself on her Instagram: 19-year-old Robot living in LA.

virtual idols on the metaverse
Here's an example of a post on Instagram, and as you can see, there's nothing different than a post from an average Instagrammer.

What’s interesting actually is that she’s also a beauty influencer. It should be understood that virtual idols also do product placements and behave in stories and content like classic influencers.

Although they are artificial images, virtual idols have very real advantages over their human namesakes.

On the one hand, virtual idols do not have the mood swings that we poor mortals can have. No fatigue, no questioning, etc. Virtual idols don't age either. There's no drama, gratuitous criticism or anything like that.

The downside is that it's expensive to create a virtual character. These virtual characters cannot offer long content. This would cost too much and take a lot of time. Don't forget that there is not just software behind it but entire teams of videographers, illustrators and special effects designers.

Typically, they post short videos or photos. Technology, although powerful, cannot match human face time, for the moment, anyway.

The future of virtual humans on the metaverses

With the advent of metaverses, 3D avatars and virtual idols will also gain popularity. This seems the logical next step.

According to the research institute iiMedia Research, in 2020, the market share of virtual idols in China was 3,46 billion Yuan/RMB. Merchandising was around 64 billion Yuan or around 9 billion euros. The institute estimates that revenues for this sector will see net growth over the coming years.

You should know that more metaverses like Decentraland ou Pavia gain popularity, the more virtual idols benefit. Ultimately, nothing better for these characters than a parallel world with avatars that resemble them (more or less).

In terms of the technology or process that will be used. It's too early to really know. These could be avatars like those of the characters. This can be in the form of NFTs, or many other structures… For the moment, from this point of view, it is good to affirm that techno is still young.

In any case, virtual stars have everything they need to create communities and createengage socially. As you know, this can be decisive in estimating the value of a crypto.

In short, the future has some rather surprising things in store for us, you will agree. It also tells us how metaverses will be unprecedented spaces for e-commerce and influence.
