In the small seaside town of El Zonte, El Salvador, an innovative economic initiative has transformed the lives of its residents. It is Bitcoin Beach, a village-scale circular economy that uses Bitcoin as its primary currency. While the country became the first country in the world to make bitcoin legal tender on September 7, 2021, the village's use of it became a veritable Bitcoin experimentation laboratory.

Since then, the village of El Zonte has aroused curiosity and questions around the world. A film entitled "Dare to dream: A story from El Salvador" (in French Dare to dream: a story from El Salvador) was produced to concretely show the history of this small seaside village which has become a world reference in the adoption of Bitcoin.

A film that shows the evolution of Bitcoin in El Salvador

The documentary “Dare to Dream” was directed by Joe Delahunty and traces the history of Bitcoin Beach from the beginning. The film begins by introducing the two pioneers of the project, Roman Martinez (Chimbera) and Jorge Valenzuela. Chimbera and Valenzuela are childhood friends who grew up in poverty in El Salvador. Very quickly, they saw Bitcoin as an opportunity to change their lives and those of their community.

With the help of a backer who wishes to remain anonymous, Chimbera and Valenzuela began promoting the use of Bitcoin in El Zonte. They organized educational workshops to teach residents how to use Bitcoin and they set up infrastructure to facilitate Bitcoin transactions.

“A country ravaged by war, impoverished, corrupt and deeply violent… and yet there was a group of people led by the top leaders of Bitcoin Beach…

The documentary shows how Bitcoin has had a positive impact on the lives of the residents of El Zonte. Thanks to Bitcoin, people have been able to access financial services, improve their standard of living and take advantage of new economic opportunities.

The production also highlights the challenges facing Bitcoin Beach. In fact, Bitcoin adoption seemed slow at first and the project was facing criticism from some people. However, Bitcoin Beach continues to grow and today it is A model for other communities around the world. Indeed, multiple bitcoin villages like the village Ekasi in South Africa are appearing taking as a reference The Zonte.

The documentary recounts the genesis of Bitcoin Beach

The documentary begins by tracing the origins of Bitcoin Beach, dispelling the mystery surrounding its creation. With meticulous precision, Delahunty traces the roots of this revolutionary movement. It also uncovers untold stories that led to an unprecedented financial revolution in El Zonte.

The film vividly depicts the potential of Bitcoin, beyond mere speculation. Through intimate vignettes, we can see the profound impact of Bitcoin as a tool, freeing El Zonte from violence and despair. It has offered the residents a glimmer of hope and a chance for young people to stay rooted in their community. In fact, it is not insignificant that the film is called “dare to dream”. There is a great sense of hope and optimism that Bitcoin has been able to bring to this community, which before Bitcoin was known only for its poverty and crime rate…

“Dare to Dream” is an important documentary that shows the potential of Bitcoin to bring positive change to the world. The film is a testament to the hope and resilience of the people of El Zonte, who transformed their community with Bitcoin. It is now one of the essential documentaries on Bitcoin.
